Algebra 1/2 (Pre-Algebra)

This course covers:  area, percent, ratio, order of operations, and other beginning algebra concepts.

Algebra I

Mr. Jonathan Priest
This course involves manipulating numbers and equations through Algebraic processes.  In this course we will investigate the ways we can apply equations and functions to help solve lots of different kinds of problems, be able to manipulate and visually evaluate results, and most importantly looking at the marvelous and awesome design God has woven into His Creation.

We will review a few of the topics of Algebra I and go into more detail with others, while introducing many new topics needed for precalculus and college level mathematics courses.

American History

​Mr. Robert Ludwig
This course will include a brief treatment of American History from the American Revolution to 1890.  The main focus will cover the Age of Theodore Roosevelt to the Election of 1960, the election of John F. Kennedy.  There will be presentations on the Progressive Era, World War I, The Roaring Twenties, The Great Depression and of course, The Second World War. Also covered, the Cold War, the Korean War, the McCarthy Era, and the beginning of the Space Race. The Presidencies of Truman and Eisenhower leading to the Kennedy - Nixon race in 1960.

A basic drawing class using various charcoal media.  Class will focus on learning and developing drawing and observation skills, as well as page design.  Drawing from directly observed will be emphasized.  In each class we will discuss techniques/concepts, have demonstrations, drawing time and individual critiques.  
Supply fee approximately $30.  AU course ART 140 Fundamentals of Drawing.

Bible-Greek

Mr. Dan Rickett

 A combination Bible and Introduction to Biblical Greek course focusing on Mark’s Gospel. Students will examine Mark’s literary structure, theology and portrait of Jesus while also learning the basics of Biblical Greek. Classes will consist of interactive lectures and small group in-class work. No prior knowledge of Biblical Greek will be expected.

In Biology we study the complexity of the living part of God's creation.  We will define life, learn about the different kingdoms of living organisms, investigate cell structures, DNA, genetics, evolution and creation, ecology, and identify systemic structures.

Students will gain understanding in managing personal finances, the fundamentals of business finances, and prepare to be smart shoppers, informed taxpayers, and valued employees.  We will also look at the Biblical basis for how we ought to handle both personal and professional finances.

Functions, limits, techniques of differentiation and integration, with applications in the natural, social and management sciences.  This course is college level and requires 2 years of high school Algebra and 1 year of Geometry.  AU course MATH 201 Calculus w/Applications to Management, Life, and Social Sciences.

In Chemistry we study the complexity of matter in God's creation. We will evaluate types of energy, the structure and function of atoms and molecules, changes in matter, stoichiometry, acids and bases, solutions, equilibrium, and redox reactions.

Geometry

This course is designed to emphasize the study of the properties and applications of common geometric figures in two and three dimensions.  Inductive and deductive thinking skills are used in problem solving situations, and applications to the real world are stressed.  It also emphasizes writing proofs to solve (prove) properties of geometric figures.  Students who complete Geometry should take Algebra II next.

In this class students will read & become acquainted with two classics of  literature while growing in their knowledge of God, biblical wisdom, and personal devotion to Him.  Some selections will be read and discussed in class.  The majority of the reading will be done out of the classroom.  Classes will consist of discussion and lecture.  Assignments will include competing weekly review questions, quizzes and one paper.

Introduction to Journalism

Mr. Matt Timmons

This class will examine the basics of reporting news in a newspaper format, including the structure of news articles, the various types of news articles, and the techniques of reporting.  Students will learn the basics
of conducting interviews, the dynamics of quoting and attribution, and how to find news articles.  
Various other important topics will be examined, such as journalism ethics, bias in media, and components
​of modern media (i.e. social media, blogging, & online news reporting, etc.)  Students will be required to write articles, conduct interviews, read assignments, and put into practice items from the classroom discussion.  Purchasing a textbook may be necessary.

Latin I

This course will provide students with a firm foundation in Latin usage and grammar. This will be done through a strict routine of studying vocabulary, memorizing paradigms, and translating words and sentences from Latin to English and English to Latin. Students will learn the basic forms and elements of the language to understand the proper uses of case, gender, number, mood, and tense.  There will be quizzes over the homework done for the previous week which will reinforce the student’s understanding of what they have covered. There will be tests for units of chapters that will require the student to combine the skills learned up to that point.

Philosophy

Dr. Mark Hamilton

Students participating in this course will become acquainted with the primary classical theories of ethical living and the approach of many great thinkers 
including Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Mill, Nietzsche, Jesus and others as they present various approaches to ethics. The course will also relate some of these theories to specific ethical problems with particular focus on the issues of justice and rights. Various ethical issues will be interspersed into the course. The student will learn and then critically examine the strengths and weaknesses of these various ethical theories. Much of the work will also involve applying these theories to some of the more challenging moral situations we face.  This is a college level course.  AU course PHIL 215 Ethics.

Physical Science

This course involves discovering the non-living aspects of our world at a macroscopic level. We will investigate the forces and parts of the world that we can readily observe. The class will have the opportunity to delve into the “working parts” that make up the physical world God has created. We will learn about the mechanisms God uses to keep the world, and universe, functioning.

Spanish

  Students will be introduced to Spanish as an academic subject in order to gain proficiency in the areas of listening, speaking, writing and reading. Lessons and exercises provide opportunities for students to express themselves in Spanish.  Activities, homework, assignments, quizzes and other assessments will determine individual progress.  Information about contemporary life, customs and culture in the Spanish speaking world will be presented with each unit. ​

Students will learn to speak in informative and
persuasive speeches as well as practice impromptu and extemporaneous speaking.  This is a college level course, high school sophomores and above may take even if not seeking college credit.  AU course COM 101 Human Communication.

Speech II

This course is a study and practice in argumentative debate to gain audience support.  Emphasis will be placed on developing skills in
​actual situations that call for debate, and analysis of the arguments. Believers should always be prepared to be a defense for Christ and able to share their faith.  AU course COM 208 Argumentation and Advocacy.

Western Civilization I

Western Civilization I will begin with a treatment of early civilization in Mesopotamia Ancient Egypt, and the early Hebrews.  Also covered, Greek and
Roman history down to 500 AD. with emphasis on the advent of Christianity.

Western Civilization II

Western Civilization II will cover the rise of Islam, the spread of Christianity, Charlemagne, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and Reformation, and the advent of modern Europe. The Vikings, early England, the Age of Discovery,
​and the Scientific Revolution as time allows.

An introductory exploration of historical developments, beliefs and practices in selected Eastern and Western world religious traditions,with an emphasis on Christianity.  Since students will be introduced to methods for analyzing and interpreting sacred texts, college level writing skills are required.  AU course REL 107 Exploring World Religions.
